SPENDING MONEY

A bank system will be set up to deposit each scouts spending money. This money will be withdrawn from the troop’s "banker" every day after lunch. This money is used for craft supplies for various (some) merit badges, program fees, souvenirs, snacks or drinks. Each scout determines the amount of money, which you deposit. We will help keep it safe and it will help to keep you thinking about the fourth item of the scout law; Thrifty. Suggested amounts from previous years has been around $30.00 depending on merit badge costs (if any). See Merit Badge information further down this page for cost information for each merit badge. Also, we normally stop in Clinton for lunch on the way to camp. So, having lunch money for that meal is necessary above what is mentioned aboved. Of course, for those that wish to bring their lunch is acceptable also.

LIGHTS OUT, ALL SCOUTS IN TENTS

WHAT IS KP?

At camp, the K.P. is your waiter. He sets the table, delivers the food and cleans up after the meal. To help leaders and new K.P.’s, the following is a basic activity outline. Special instructions are given to all K.P.’s at each meal to cover variables. Tables will be assigned to each unit and K.P.’s are to serve and eat at their assigned tables. The K.P. duties must be rotated among all Scouts at the table. K.P.’s are your waiters. As in a normal restaurant situation they will be required to have clean hands and have on a clean shirt. If they do not pass inspection they will be required to wash and be reinspected.

1. The K.P. arrives at the dining hall at K.P. call (20 minutes before mealtime.)

2. Pass cleanliness inspection by commissioners. As in a restaurant situation, KP's are expected to have clean hands and have on a clean shirt. If they do not pass inspection, they will be required to clean themselves, and then be reinspected before they can begin their duties.

3. Set assigned table with a plate, glass, knife, fork, and spoon for each of the eight people.

4. Special instructions will be given as K.P.’s set their tables. At this time, sugar, salt, pepper, bread, and napkins can be checked and replenished.

5. When their tables are set, the K.P.’s will sit down quietly, and wait for further instructions.

6. All campers enter the dining hall through their door and are seated. Hot food is not issued until everyone is seated. After the blessing. K.P.’s are sent by section to pick up hot food. (We may ask for assistance at this time). One hot item per person.

7. Food  and drinks are picked up at the kitchen serving counter as directed by dining hall staff.

8. Refills on drinks, bread and such, are on an as needed basis. Seconds for food may be announced and directed by the dining hall staff.

9. At the conclusion of the meal and program the program director will announce, "the K.P.’s remain," THEN AND ONLY THEN DOES CLEAN UP BEGIN. All food is scraped into one serving bowl and all liquids are put into the pitchers and the silverware is separated. The K.P. will then dispose of the trash, garbage, and return dirty dishes to the washing area in the order requested by the staff.

10. Once the table is cleared, the K.P. will wash the tabletop using a prepared solution. The floor under and about the table is swept and the sweepings are placed in trashcans

11. When each K.P. thinks his area is clean, he holds up his hand for area inspection and release by a commissioner. The clean up after the meal should take from 12 – 15 minutes. If food is spilled, the responsible K.P. will be required to do some spot clean up. While being a K.P. may not be everyone’s "most enjoyable task," a concerted effort will be made by the staff to help K.P.’s. However, firm control must be maintained and K.P.’s will be expected to follow directions. We request only one K.P. per table. An experienced Scout should handle the first meal K.P. responsibility of a session.

RESERVATION CAVE POLICY

Exploring caves can be a great adventure for some Scouts and can be done so if proper precautions are taken to ensure the safety of all involved. Any Scouts wishing to visit one of our many caves must be accompanied by at least two adults over 18 years of age and must have a hike permit filed with the camp office prior to leaving. Interested persons should first check with the camp director for a current list of possible cave closings.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION

A Scoutmaster may dispense any prescription if properly labeled with frequency and dosage by the pharmacy. If not properly labeled, the health lodge must administer medication. All prescription drugs dispensed by the unit must be locked with restricted access and records kept detailing dispensing activity. All drugs needing refrigeration may be kept in the locked refrigerator in the commissioner cabin or health lodge. All needles must be disposed in a sharps container also located in the lead commissioner cabin.

CORTES HEALTH LODGE

The Cortes Health Lodge is an excellent first aid facility. First aid at the health lodge is just that…first aid. It is not a hospital or an emergency room.

The council is fortunate to have many physicians volunteer their time and services to provide a high level of care at the health lodge. The treatment of pre-existing or non-camp related illnesses or injuries should not be expected; such cases will be referred to local health providers who charge for services.

Sick call hours have been established for the convenience of both the campers and the medical staff, and to accommodate all the programs on our schedule. As a general guideline, sick call will be held following every meal and include non-emergencies such as: sore throats, poison ivy, and problems that are not life threatening.

SICK CALL HOURS

One hour following each meal. Not during meal times except in an emergency.

EMERGENCY

Emergency care is available 24-hours-a-day. In case of emergency, contact the camp office during office hours (7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.) or the lead commissioner after hours. They will coordinate with the health lodge for treatment. In suspected neck, back injuries, fractures and other suspected severe injuries, do not attempt to move or transport the patient without instruction by qualified personnel from the reservation health lodge.

LYME DISEASE

Anyone participating in outdoor activities should take steps to prevent exposure to tick bites.

     1. Wear long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Tuck pants into boots or socks.

     2. Wear light colored clothing to make it easier to spot ticks.

     3. Conduct frequent and thorough "tick checks." Finding and removing the ticks quickly is important.  "Tick checks" should be conducted at least every 4-6 hours while in remote areas of camp.

      4. Insect repellents can be hep repel ticks (use non-aerosol).

      5. stay on trails and avoid "bush whacking" through high grass and brush.

WEST NILE VIRUS - Human illness from West Nile Virus is rare, even in areas where the virus has been reported. The chance that any one person is going to become ill from a mosquito bite is low. You can further reduce your chances of becoming ill by protecting yourself from mosquito bites.

To avoid mosquito bites, apply insect repellant containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-tolumide) when you are outdoors. When possible, wear long sleeve clothes and long pants treated with repellans containing permethrin or DEET since mosquitos may bite through thin clothing. Do not apply repellants containing permethrin directly to exposed skin. If you spray your clothing, there is no need to spray repellant containing DEET on the skin under your clothing.

MERIT BADGE INFORMATION

Not all requirements for merit badges offered at camp can be completed at camp. When requirements are done at camp, in the presence of the merit badge counselor or instructor, it is usually clear that the Scout has the knowledge or skill level required.

Requirements completed outside the presence of a counselor, necessitates that the counselor, review with the Scout that he can demonstrate his understanding. For requirements done before camp, Scouts are advised to bring evidence of completion of projects with them to camp. For example, camping merit badge requirement 9a requires a Scout to have 20 days and 20 nights of camping. A note from a Scout leader certifying the required 20/20 is less satisfactory than the Scout providing a log of his camping experience. Notes attest to completion are less satisfactory than evidence like photos, logs, journals, drawing, etc.

Physical evidence and the Scouts personal knowledge displayed during the counseling enable the counselor to make certain that the requirements have been met. Please prepare your Scouts by helping them "show their stuff" to the camp merit badge counselor.
